Carl Bildt, minister for foreign affairs, says that Sweden’s ability of participating in international military operations will not be affected by the proposed cuts in the defence budget. The cuts affect mostly development of Swedish manufactured military material. Instead Sweden will buy more material on the international market.

Bildt comments the resignation of Odenberg “Of course this is bad news, but the government’s program will not be affected” he says.

Many Swedish newspapers have been writing critical editorials about Fredrik Reinfeldt’s ability to run his government considering this was the third minister during his first year as Prime minister who resigned. His assertion that the military budget cuts can be performed without effects on the military capacity is also questioned.

Several foreign newspapers (for example Pravda and Deutsche Welle) are reporting about Odenberg resignation.
