The tax on petrol will go up 0.29 crowns per litres. This decision was announced yesterday. The reason is more to show that the government care about the environment than to pull money into the state, says analysts.

The government has promised to come with heavy measures next year to fight global warming and this, they say, is a first step. To compensate people with long way to travel to work, the maximum tax deduction is also raised.

It is not only petrol that will be affected. It is the carbon dioxide tax that is raised so the industry will also see some costs go up. The opposition in general supports the program but say that more is needed. “With the public opinion of today, there is a possibility to do more. This little raise is to weak.” Says peter Eriksson, spokesperson for the Greens.
