Shoe attack against Israeli Ambassador

National News | 2009-02-04 | 30 comments

The Ambassador of Israel in Sweden, Benny Dagan, was this Wednesday evening subjected to a shoe attack during a lecture at Stockholm University.

- Around 50 people were on the premises and we were also there guarding. At 17.15 pm two persons throw objects at the ambassador. One throw a shoe and the other one or two books, says Joakim Caryll, press officer of the Stockholm Police, to news agency Sveriges Nyheter.

It is still unclear if the objects hit the ambassador, who held a lecture about the coming election in Israel.

The two perpetrators were caught and are suspected of battery, or alternatively attempt of battery. They are now questioned by the police at Södermalm police station. The lecture is said to have continued after the attack, but was once again disturbed at the ending.

- In connection to the closing words, someone also shouted invectives, says Joakim Caryll.

Why everybody is offended by the Gaza bombing? Hamas keep saying they won the war. Where is the problem? As a matter of fact they continue to send rockets to Israel. Are they seriously going to win another war? This is the continuation of the Arabs lies! They do not deserve the sympathy and the money of the EU.

Dr.Strangelove:The military aid of US to Israel is more than any other country (including Patriot Missile Defence Shield System). The recent agreement(3 billion per year) just show the official figures,I wish you may have access to Un official "Pentagon Financial Military Aid" to Israel. It might be shocking for you that White phosporus bombs, used in Gaza, was supplied by US to Israel. Why not Israel should be declared as 53rd US state? As US president is much worried about it than Huricane Katrina

ben hur: your information is not accurate, Israel receives approximately 3 billion per year (historical averages of 1.8 bil). egypt and jordan receive similar amounts. The US just signed a 10 year 30 billion agreement, thats 3 billion a year. IT is not exactly a handout, they have to spend it on US goods as do the many other countries that receive US assistance (160 nations receive US military aid plus the PA). truth1: Iran just stoned 2 men to death last week.

Sweden is known to be anti-Semite, even during the Nazi Era they didn´t allow Jews to come to Sweden and only in 1974 Jews could have positions in government. Only under pressure from Denmark did the Swedes let the Jews into Sweden. You don´t talk about the 850,000 Jews expelled from the Arabs countries, the Arabs stolen everything they owned. They start a new life from nothing in Israel! Why can´t Arabs do the same and help the Palestinians? Because they want this situation to be permanent!

Peace will come to the Middle East when the USA, France, Great?Britain and Germany find another helpless country (Belgium perhaps?) to steal from the landowners and install Jews everywhere. They then can control that country and threaten their neighbors with white phosphorus and WMD. They will be funded (as now) on the backs of the American, French, English and German taxpayers. Holocaust Museums will be on every corner of Belgium, which will now become known as Tzipiland. Such arrogance....

Remember folks, he did say they would destroy the US from within. I think we should look to our own house as well; do we have such types in our government in Yisrael? probably..... you bet.

palestinian refugees exist in lebanon and jordan b/c arab countries hate palestinians - they´re viewed as troublemakers wherever they go. thats why king hussein of jordan killed 5,000 in 1972 when they used western jordan as a launching ground for terrorist attacks against israel. following that raid called "Black September", they set up shop in Lebanon. why are they still refugees in arab countries and treated like trash there?they must choose peace.Adam, the stone comment was sarcasm it seems.

Is Israel´s use of force proportional? A people who´ve lived on their land for over 1000 years have a right to be there. When Israel interprets laws AS DOES THE REST OF THE WORLD, it will begin to live in peace.

Throwing rocks at a refugee just because you assume he has something to do with Hamas? That is indefensible. If all you understand is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, think of all of the Gazan children killed in Israel´s latest barrage when you see such a person walking down the street. Hopefully the Palestinian refugees in Europe will spread the truth.

Peace will come to the Middle East when Israel finally complies with the UN resolution from 1967 and allows refugees to return to their lands. International law does not care about phrases like "chosen people", the "promised land" or myths. The law is about facts and the truth and justice.Hamas was created first 1987 so if the Isreal politicians had decided from the beginning to comply with the UN resolutions Hamas would probably never have existed. The truth is sometimes slow but it always wins.

Serge-Please, tell me which part of your homeland is under occupation? If you walk the streets any European town you will meet refugees from Palestine. Have you ever been a refugee yourself? Can you imagine how it feels to be treated like a second class citizen? Can you imagine a life in an open prison called Gaza? Throwing a shoe is a symbol of more than 40 years of injustice and frustration. The representative of an occupation power comes to the University to talk about democracy!!!

I am in agreement with Bassim! Just yesterday I saw a Palestinian here in Montreal and so, completely understandably, I began throwing rocks at him. Although this attack is an offence according to the law it is completely understandable. Everyone who has been watching pictures from Gaza during the horrible attacks must have felt anger and hopelessness. When small children are dying every statement which comes from the politicians sounds like a lie. Israeli ambassador talks about democracy in his homeland while at the same time Palestinians in Israel are second class citizens. After the last war even the most honest lecture sounds hollow.
