The dishonorable Aftonbladet affair

Reader's Voice | 2009-08-20 | 50 comments

Last Monday the Swedish evening tabloid Aftonbladet published an article by Daniel Boström where he ventilated “very strong suspicions” about the Israeli Army for harvesting the organs from a Palestinian man 17 years ago.

There is no evidence that any organs have been stolen, neither from the event in 1992 or later.

The article has caused very strong reactions from Israel, but also from the Jewish community in Sweden. This is understandable, the article in Aftonbladet play on old anti-Semitic conspiracy tales about how Jews kidnap children, slaughter them and steel their blood.

One thing must be clear. The freedom of expression must be tolerated, either it is about caricatures of the Muslim prophet or bizarre anti-Semitic urban myths. No government or politicians should have any say in what the media publish.

But it is anyway sad to see the low standard of journalism used by a Swedish newspaper in this case, although many people can not be surprised that it was at the cultural section at Aftonbladet that published a story like this.

Despite being a newspaper that describes itself as ‘independent social democrat’, the cultural section is known for being radically cultural leftist, publishing articles by the most controversial left-wing writers. As for example Maoist Jan Myrdal, who visited Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge terror but claims not to have seen any wrong-doings. Deputy Editor of the cultural section, Åsa Linderborg, has herself defended suicide bombers in Iraq.

It is also sad to see the type of damage-control that Aftonbladet now is engaged in. At his blog do Jan Helin, Editor in chief, defend Boström’s article, claiming it to be just an opinion piece (thereby implying it not having to be subordinated to the same hard journalistic demands for verified facts and figures as an ordinary article). He states that “Aftonbladet do not side with if the claims are true or not”.

Helin then describes how a hateful campaign now has started against the cultural section of Aftonbladet, and mentions that he quickly received 200 hateful emails from all around the world.

He thereby tries to make Aftonbladet into some kind of martyr in the name of press freedom, instead of doing something much more suited: giving the public an apology for the sloppy editorial policy of the paper. This is despicable in its dishonesty and shamefulness.

for more than half a century, Western politicians and diplomats have built upon a mirage: the belief that because we see peace as a benefit, everyone in the Middle East must see it that way, too. This assumption is most obviously false in regard to Hamas, which has ruled Gaza with an iron fist since Israel withdrew from that territory in 2005. Hamas´ leaders have been candid: Their goal is the annihilation of Israel, an "infidel" nation occupying land Allah has endowed to the Muslims.

Here´s a reminder that you don´t have to be a Muslim to be an anti-Semite. Ukraine has adopted the organ theft libel. It looks like Donald Bostrom and Aftonbladet were correct. There are ´Palestinians´ organs being trafficked after all... in Jordan. So he flew to Egypt earlier this year, had a kidney removed, and was paid 5,000 dollars. But it was a Faustian bargain.

Christina, you mentioned the “neutrality”. Oskar Angelus, the interior minister of Estonia during the Nazi occupation found refuge in Sweden. Police units under his command murdered Jews.
