How far can art go?

Culture | 2009-08-24 | 3 comments
The trial has started against Anna Odell, the art student in Stockholm, who in her student examination work acted as a psychotic. She fooled people to believe that she would jump from a bridge, and she fought violently with the medical personell at the psyciatry clinic.

The controviersial art-work was performed during the spring of 2009. At first it was a discussion of putting the university as responsible for her project, since it was not stopped. Now the focus is instead on the student, Anna Odell.

The 35 year old Ms Odell was not very talkative towards the press before the trial started.

- I wish I was better prepared, she said to Svenska Dagbladet.

Ms Odell is charged for false alarm, barratry and violent resistance. The prosecutor wants her to be convicted to a conditional sentence and a fine.

Ms Odell on the other hand denies false alarm and barratry and she argues against the demands for damage payment. She admits violent resistance but underlines that it was never her intention to commit a crime.

After her defence lawyer, Claes Borgström, had finnished his final statement, Ms Odell took the opportunity to say a few words.*

- I am not here as a private person, but as an artist, she started.

She went on to say that her provocative art work may help people to see what is wrong in society and what should be discussed more.

She does not claim that all psyciatric care is bad, but that parts of it need more transparancy and discussion.

Her final comment was rather provocative:

- I would not be here today if I was a journalist, especially if I was a male journalist.

The sentence will be delivered on 31 August.

As a neighbour of mine is a violent psychotic, I can see where Ms Odell is coming from with this. In England we have a system called ´care in the community´, which patently does not work. My life has been threatened - even a four year old child has been threatened but we have to rely on the courts for help. How long does that take? Perhaps Ms Odell could find a more suitable medium for her work.

As an artist myself I can state that this was in no way art! If this idiotic woman was anything close to being an artist she would not need to pull a lame stunt like this to attract attention. Prosecute her to the fullest is my critique.

Controversial “art”-work in Stockholm are not new. In January 2004 in the name of “art” the "Snow White and The Madness of Truth" (Snövit och sanningens vansinne) was presented as an “artwork” in Stockholm. Many saw this as an encouragement for further killing by terrorists. It was good the Israeli ambassador to Sweden disconnected the electricity powering of the installation and tipped one of its lights into the water.

Sweden recently decided to start taking admission fees for non-EU students starting in the fall semester 2011. What do you think of this?
