Big robbery in Stockholm

Local News | 2009-09-23 | 16 comments
A building used for repositting large sums of cash was robbed early this morning in Västberga in South Stockholm.

Most of the cash in the premises was meant to be transported to ATMs around the Stockholm region. Since most people get their monthly salary in a couple of days and thus many cash withdrawals are expected, there was more money than usual there. The exact sum that the robbers took is not yet known, but there were several hundred millions Swedish Kronor there according to the Swedish television.

The armed robbers arrived by helicopter and broke into the house from the roof. Large sums of cash had just been transported from the basement to the top of the building according to the routines. The fact that the robbers obviously knew this has caused speculations about if an employee did help them. Around twenty employees were on duty at the moment despite the early hour.

The whole operation was well prepared. Caltraps were thrown on the roads in the area to make it difficult for the police. A box with the text ‘bomb’ had been placed next to the nearest police helicopter which stopped the police from using it and delayed the hunt for the robbers.

The helicopter used for the robbery has been found in Arninge south of the city. The helicopter was stolen earlier during the night.

Kjell Lindgren at the Stockholm Police Press Information Center says to the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter that the most probable scenario is that the robbers are hiding in the forest.

– They could be dangerous since they are armed and stressed but there is no reason to warn the public.
