´Tsunami tapes´ to be classified for seventy years

The government wants to classify secret information regarding their internal communication the days after the tsunami catastrophe 2004 for seventy years.

The tsunami in South East Asia at December 26, 2004 killed 543 Swedes; mostly in Thailand. The Social democratic government at the time recieved a lot of criticism for reacting to slowly and thereby delaying help to injured Swedes. A commission was installed to investigate what had been done and said at the government’s office during the crucial days. Two years later, a couple of hundred tapes with data about the internal communication were found in a vault at the government’s office. The content has never been made public.

The present center-right government now wants to classify the content on the tapes for seventy years. They refer to security issues. According to the daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet the government also wants to change the constitution so the Principle of public access to official records shall not apply on backup copies. The original information is is deleted.
