Increase of emply flats in Sweden

National News | 2009-11-08 | 1 comment
The number of empty apartments is on the rise now after ten years of decrease.

The number of empty flats in council houses has been falling for ten years. But this year there has been an increase. Council houses are owned and managed by the local authorities, mostly though self-managed housing corporations.

Today there are around 5 400 empty apartments in Sweden. This is an increase with 700 compared to last year. This says the National Housing Credit Guarantee Board (BKN) according to Swedish public radio broadcaster SR.

The empty apartments are most common in smaller municipalities. One example is Söderhamn with around 26.000 inhabitants located on the coast 260 km north from Stockholm. It has 436 empty apartments. Another example is Göinge, a small municipality in the northern part of Skåne, the southernmost region of Sweden. It has 135 empty apartments.

The worst year in modern time was 1998. Then, there were around 62 000 empty apartments throughout the country.
