Swedish football referee critisised

Sports | 2009-11-20 | 11 comments
The Swedish national team missed the football world cup in France, but a Swede is still in the middle of the media attention.

The Swedish referee Martin Hansson missed that French striker Thiery Henry touched the ball with his hand before the goal that sent France and not Ireland to South Africa. Otherwise the game would have gone on to possibly be determined by a penalty shootout.

Reconstructions show however that Hansson and his assistant referees could not possibly see Henry’s hand from their positions since other players were in their way writes the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Nevertheless, the incident has naturally upset the Irish and even become a topic for discussion in the Irish national parliament.

Hansson did a very good match until this incident and what effects it will have on his career is still an open question.

Hansson says to Expressen that he is not allowed to give any comments on the game but that  "life has to go on and I think I will survive this storm as well"

They surely could see the offside...that was the first thing to happen. I mean the referee seen every foul the Irish made & he made up a few himself against Ireland. And then a lot of the sissy French player´s were falling down half the time crying for a foul & as for the dirty play from them I mean with all the bribes going on in other European top games being investigated... I wouldn´t be surprised if this game was also a downright "Bribe". The first of this "World Cup" it´s all very "Fishy"!

The referee should have his left hand cut off.

Why only criticize the referee? How about Henry? He doesn´t deserve criticizing? If it is true the it is absurd? It is like the policeman sent to jail by the judge while the thief set free because the policeman failed to catch the thief. And it is like scape goat!

Henry is guilty of cheating on a grand scale & FIFA of corruption. Of course its antics were designed to exclude any country in favour of France. The panicked necessity for seeding & the playing of the only second leg in the first seeds country was designed to keep France in the ´competition´. Only a total idiot would not realise this. The display of a fair play flag and indeed the adoption of a fair play code are now redundant. Small nations now realise it´s about dog eat dog not fair play!

I have real sympathy for Ireland in this case. Terrible, but a reply is of course not possible, it would open pandoras box for appeales and replays in many different cases. But there should be video cameras and the referee should check them in cases like this. I didn´t like the French national football team before I will not like them anymore after this.

Of course we in Ireland are VERY dissapointed but Martin Hansson should not take all the blame. FIFA didn´t want ´lesser teams like Ireland (or indeed Sweden) in the Finals, first they changed the rules for the play off draw and then the appoint a relativly inexperienced (international)referee who would obviously be reluctant to go against the home side. FIFA will never allow video replays because they would loose the ability to pressure referees to facilitate certain results.

As a football fan I think the referee & assistants should be demoted for their poor performance on the night(not just the handball incident). As an Irish man I really would just like an admitance of guilt & a sincere apology.

In reference to Tommie Ullman´s piece. "Reconstructions show however that Hansson and his assistant referees could not possibly see Henry’s hand from their positions." This is not true, no players were obstructing his assistant & it is there job not to be obstructed! Also he did not have a good game. made some terrible dicisions on the night.

Unfortunately for Martin Hansson he appears to have been an unwitting participant in a drama with two hands in it! Henry´s did the foul deed, Sepp Blatter wrote the script! What material for a Shakespeare! And, Martin Hansson´s real job is to put out fires! He helped to light one hell of a fire in Ireland!

The referee should be banned from the world cup and at least one year from important matches. The fact that he didn´t even try to make the right calls is inexcusable.
