“Improve the control of guest students”

National News | 2009-12-22
The government needs to review the process of residence permits and admissions for foreign students. This the National Audit Office writes in a report.

This year, around 300,000 people applied to Swedish universities. Almost one third, 95,000 applications, came from persons residing outside the EU / EEA.

It all is well in line with the government´s target to increase the internationalization of the system of higher education. The only problem is that there are no checks done on those who are granted a residence permit, if these students actually are pursuing studies in Sweden.

The National Audit Office therefore calls on the government to review the entire regulatory framework for admission of students outside EU / EEA. Not least, the authorities concerned to cooperate and exchange information must do it more effectively. In addition, the government must clarify which authority is responsible for inspections.
