Stockholm in big freeze

Local News | 2010-01-09 | 3 comments
The cold weather has got Stockholm in a firm grip. Tenants are freezing in their apartments, thousands of households suffer from power outages, and the situation for the homeless is unusually difficult. At the same time only just over half of the Swedish nuclear reactors have been running.

This week, thousands upon thousands of households in the Stockholm area have been hit by power outages, because of the high load on the power grid. The power companies have called in extra staff and special rapid emergency units in order to as quickly as possible solve the problems encountered.

The Union of Tenants is contacted by many Stockholm tenants who are cold in their apartments. At the same time are many NGOs aimed at the socially vulnerable concerned for the situation for the city´s homeless.

Yesterday the power distribution system was in dire straits and barely was able to meet the requirements - there were no larger shortages and no one had to be disconnected from the main grid. Electricity prices tripled from the already high price.

Nuclear power plants on half speed

The soaring price of electricity has been explained by the fact that several large nuclear reactors have been shut down in combination with the sharp cold hit.

Just over half of Swedish nuclear reactor was running for a period in December, due to maintenance work. Still today several large reactors are taken out of service or turned off.

This article seems to have a lot to say about the homeless and the cold people of Sweden as well as Nuclear Project that were stop by the government. I am wondering if stopping the project of the Nuclear Projects is such a good idea. Because, I feel that their must be some Nuclear Waste that must be dealt with and, of course, people that work in the plant. Did the people get new jobs or maybe someone help them to relocate for better jobs? I don´t know. Furthermore, how about the homeless ?

Yes. It is already time to connect factors like this to Climate change. If we ought to make a change in global approach to Climate change we must spread the word. People pushing these questions to their politics. Of course a cold climate is related to climate change! now look all the implications it has...

Question

Sweden recently decided to start taking admission fees for non-EU students starting in the fall semester 2011. What do you think of this?
