Today it was the Swedish candidate for the EU-commission Cecilia Malmström’s turn to answer questions from the European parliament. Malmström will be commissionaire for Home Affairs.

Cecilia Malmström, a former member of the European parliament and Swedish Minister for European affairs, said when answering a question from the green group that she wants to open new ways fo immigrants to get into the EU in a legal way. The rights and obligations that follows from living in the union shall be made clear for all newly arrived. Illegal immigration has to be fought harder.

She sees migration issues as some of the most important issues that the European Union has to deal with at the moment. In order to control EU’s outer border better she wants to give increased resources to Frontex, a measure that is also suggested in the Stockholm Program.

Malmström said she wanted to give priority to the struggle against terrorism but she has no new law proposals. Instead she wants to go through all the existing law, means and databases.

Some parliamentarians raised concerns about the discussions between the EU and USA to exchange information about bank costumers and flight passengers. There were also concerns about the new possibility for the police to use the Eurodac register (pdf-link) with fingerprints from asylum seekers. Malmström’s response was that when they have made an overview of all the existing databases in the European Union, they can decide what they need to do. She says that human rights have to be protected when fighting terrorism.
