Bergman Estate to open in the autumn

Culture | 2010-02-01
Four months ago, the decedent estate of the legendary film maker Ingmar Bergman seemed to spread adrift over the world. But in October a Norwegian multi-millionaire suddenly appeared from nowhere and rescued both Bergman´s furniture and house, with the plan to make it a cultural heritage dedicated to the art. By the autumn activities will be started at Bergman´s house on Fårø.

The purchase by the Norwegian inventor, Hans Gude Gudesen, of all Ingmar Bergman real estates are now almost completed. Only a few formalities remain until the foundation “Bergmangårdarna på Fårö” (The Ingmar Bergman Estate on Fårø) can use the buildings, newspaper Svenska Dagbladet writes.

“In addition, Gudesen bought almost all movable assets on the auction in late September, so now it should be moved back to Fårö from the storage in Stockholm”, says Inger Harlevi, President of the new foundation.

The goal of the Foundation is to create an international, non-commercial meeting place for artists and researchers in the spirit of what Begrman´s daughter Linn Ullmann has planned for.

One of the foundation´s first tasks is to recruit a director to Fårö, the island to the north of the island Gotland, a bit outside of Sweden´s westcoast.

“Right now, we review applications from about 30 people. Most are from Sweden, but there is also names from the U.S., Denmark, Greenland and Norway," says Harlevi, who estimates that the task is done later in February.

She expects a sneak start in the summer, but to the autumn shall the vision of Linn Ullmann become a reality. A total of twelve people – no more than three separate households - will then be able to stay at the Bergman Estate.

Creators and researchers will then be able to get free accommodation for a couple of weeks or months, provided they can give something back, such as culture, which may benefit the locals. Not only individuals and their families will be able to get a scholarship stay, but also small groups working in theater, film or musical drama.
