Ship lost environmentally hazardous cargo

National News | 2010-02-07 | 1 comment
A Finnish ship today lost several containers in the Baltic Sea outside the coast of the island Gotland.

One of the containers hold hazardous substances. The accident occurred this morning in international waters, south of Gotland.

“As we understand, four containers was standing in stack on the deck. The one on the bottom collapsed, and this led the other three to fall overboard," says Annette Manor, duty officer at the Coast Guard, to news agency TT.

One of the containers hold dangerous goods. It is about five tonnes of flammable substances, seven tonnes of substances harmful to the marine environment as well as eight tonnes of other pollutants.

During the day, the Coast Guard have searched for the cargo from the air, but to no avail. They have also passed a warning to ships in the area.

The ship who lost the containers is on its way to St. Petersburg, Russia. Once it is in port, a study will be conducted by Finnish authorities on how the accident could occur.

Another blow to the ecologically fragile Baltic sea. Why is there not a greater outcry about the Russian planned Nordstream gas pipeline which presents a grave threat as well?
