The Social Democrats has now made up their mind regarding profits in the welfare sector.

Instead of having a strict national policy, they want each municipality to be allowed to decide whether or not to accept profit driven companies in the welfare sector. They also want more specific regulations and guidelines to be included in the contract between the state / municipalities and the companies.

This issue has divided the party for a while. During the leadership of Mona Sahlin (2007-2011) they were positive to different kinds in actors on the welfare sector, also profit driven comapnies. Then they opposed it during Håkan Juholt’s short time as party chairman (2011-2012).

Footnote: Large part of the welfare system is financed by taxes in Sweden, but private companies can operate within the sector. They are then paid by the state or the municipalities. There have been a lot of discussions lately about whether or not companies in this branch should be allowed to take out profit or if they should be obliged to reinvest any profit in the welfare sector.
